FORT BENNING,Ga - Fort Benning is serving over ten thousand thanksgiving meals between today and tomorrow. For some soldiers they will not be able to make it home for the holiday, but Ronald Harrison says to make soldiers feel loved they plan to create a holiday affair.
"This is what we call our Super Bowl and this is our time of the year to shine. We go above and beyond to make the soldiers happy and try to make the soldiers real comfortable and try to provide that meal for them that they could get at home," Harrison said.
Thomas Borgonia has been based in Fort Benning since August. He says he will not be able to make it back home to Guam for the holidays but having festivities like this makes him feel less homesick.
"The food here is great it's kind of wholesome these Thanksgiving traditions, it's kind of nice and I like that other service members are incorporating that and how they serve other. It's just another way to be part of that community and give back," Borgonia said.
A couple of army traditions the organizers made sure were present was to have those in leadership positions handle the serving duties and to have a table for fallen soldiers. Colonel Anthony Judge came in to serve in the chow line this afternoon. He says they've been doing these traditions for years.
"We never miss an opportunity to recognize those that have gone before us typically those that have fallen in service of their nation," Col. Judge said.
Colonel Anthony Judge isn't the only one who feels this way. Several cooks and other organizers have been preparing thanksgiving meals for soldiers for many years. They say their favorite part is seeing soldiers smile when they come in.
